Scan the VIN, photograph six areas, and CarGrade delivers a used-car inspection where every finding points at the photo that proves it. When the photos can’t support a call, it says so instead of guessing. We designed and built the iOS app.
What it does
Scan a VIN, photograph six areas of the car, and CarGrade returns an inspection where every finding points at the photo that proves it. When the photos cannot support a call, it says so rather than passing the section.
How it works
The camera reads the VIN with VisionKit. The app validates the check digit and corrects the letters that get misread before NHTSA decodes the year, trim and open recalls. A vision model returns a grid cell for each finding, which becomes a normalized point and travels through the saliency crop, so the pin stays on the scuff when the photo is cropped to fit.
The hard parts
Keeping pins aligned through cropping. Stopping the model from inventing wear, which is handled by throwing out any finding that cannot quote what it saw. Paying for the vision calls without shipping a key inside the app.
Built with
15,000 lines of Swift, SwiftUI and SwiftData on Swift 6 strict concurrency, and no third-party packages at all. 89 tests. Every font honours Dynamic Type.
